May 7, 2005 – Lime Rock Park, CT.
After last month’s successful races at Summit Point in late April, www.HeManRacing.com headed out the door at 4:30am towards the 1.5 mile track at www.Limerock.com on Saturday, May 7th to see if “Lady Luck” was still on our side.
The weather was typical Lime Rock Spring racing…cold and misty, but track conditions proved to be fine. Willie took to the wheel for qualifying at about 10:00am to see if he could recall what he was taught at this track under the tutelage of Skip Barber Instructors several years ago.
By the 10th lap, Willie had managed to find his rhythm and best time of 1:06.073 which placed him on the starting grid in the outside of row 6 in 12th position. Not a bad start as there was a field of 25.
At about 3:00pm, the race started and the typical crowds awaited at turn one to see if all 25 cars would make it through. Happily, all metal was spared albeit a little rubber quickly shed itself from their trusted Toyos. Competition was very close and aggressive. Three laps into the race, a late braking overzealous Miata attempted to dive into turn one, a right-hander, which was already occupied by the HeMan Racing/Level 10 Miata. Although Willie felt the bang to the right rear, no immediate signs of damage were evident and we were able to maintain the position.
Sixteen laps later, that included two off road excursions due to a missed apex or two, the HeMan Racing/Level 10 Miata just barely missed a top ten finished and came home with P11 with a best time of 1:05.221. A respectable finish, but one that certainly will get better as the season progresses.
Oh, that little bumping incident in turn one, although didn’t appear to be much at the time, resulted in a destroyed rim as the force of the impact knocked one of the spokes out of the rim. Just another one of those pesky little racing things.
Thanks for your continued support, Patrick, Glenn, and Willie
