April 24, 2003 - Summit Point, WV. Well www.HeManRacing.com kicked off the 2005 SCCA Spec Miata series at www.summitpoint-raceway.com. Patrick and Glenn hit the road very early Friday morning for a track day with the hope that any looming gremlins would be exercised before Sunday’s race. Lynn (Patrick’s wife) and Willie drove down late Friday and caught up with the guys for Saturday’s qualifying session. Patrick felt the car performed well on Friday so Glenn took the Miata out for the first of two qualifying runs in the SM class. Out of a field of 41, his best qualifying time was 1:45.167 which placed him in the 27th starting position for Sunday’s race. Willie then jumped in, having registered for the ITA class, managed to squeeze out a 1:36.832 which put him 30th on the grid for Sunday.
Sunday morning came, after a huge IHOP breakfast (which no-doubt put us over our ideal racing weight), where Glenn suited up for the SM race. Despite the breakfast weight disadvantage, Glenn pushed the little Miata to his best time of 1:38.293 – a 7-second turn-around from qualifying just the day before. He certainly was on a rip and managed to come in 33rd out of 37 cars that finished.
After Glenn’s debut, Patrick outfitted the car for Willie; you know a different seat, blocks on the wheels, telephone books, a little more Rain-X, etc… Although the car isn’t rigged for the ITA class, meaning we don’t fully take advantage of the permitted modifications that would make the car more competitive because we would then be ineligible to run in SM, we oftentimes run it in ITA to give those guys what for! That being said, starting on the grid at P30, Willie managed to finish in the same position out of 38 cars that ran with his best time of 1:34.372.
Overall a great weekend! It was typical spring racing with the requisite rain and mud, but a great day that will take us into the May 7th Limerock Park, CT race. This will be a one-day event with Willie at the wheel. We’ll leave NJ at about 5am in time for the early morning qualifying and afternoon race. Since this is only a 2.5 hour trip, some of our friends will be meeting us trackside. If you have the time and want to see the HeManRacing/Level 10 car run, give Willie a shout at 973-xxx-1xxx for all the details.
Thanks again for your support,
Patrick, Glenn, Willie
