Local Team Takes First-In-Class in 13-Hour Race

Branchville, NJ – -- HeMan Racing, a locally owned SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) racing team placed first in class in a 13-hour endurance race at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, VA on November 5, 2005.

This was the third annual running of the SCCA North Carolina Region’s “Kumho Charge of the Headlight Brigade,” a 13-hour endurance race for sedans and sports cars. This year’s race started a field of over 60 cars, with He Man Racing qualifying in 43rd position. They finished the race in 26th position overall and 1st in the ITA class.

The Kumho Charge of the Headlight Brigade is the longest SCCA endurance race in America, and has captured the imagination of race teams from throughout the United States. Teams and drivers from as far away as New Jersey, California, Massachusetts and Florida were on hand for VIR this weekend. Ten classes of cars competed in this year’s race, with cars ranging from Mazda Miatas to Chevrolet Corvettes. Each team was required to have at least two drivers, and no driver could drive more than four hours at a time without a driver change.

Local businessmen Willie Bifulco of Andover, and Patrick Fanning and Glenn Portsmore of Branchville jointly own the car and race in the mid-Atlantic and New England States. This was the team’s second trip to VIR to participate in the “Kumho Charge of the Headlights Brigade.” The race ran thirteen hours from 9:30 am to 10:30 pm on Saturday, November 5. In addition to the He Man Racing Team owners, Michael Lo of New York also raced with the team. The team’s car is a red, white and blue1990 Spec Miata.

This is HeMan Racing’s third year of racing in SCCA. They race in both the Spec Miata (SM) and the ITA classifications within SCCA.
